Answer

Users should not store personal files or install any software that is not directly related to GT business use on a GT-owned machine (for further information, please see http://www.oit.gatech.edu/it-policies/policy/acceptable-incidental-use-faq or http://play.media.gatech.edu/s/cc.gatech.edu/TSO?ID=f6aed35c-b726-51e4-a6f1-fb335ec069c5).

Work-related files should be stored on users' home directories (H: drive) or on adminfs. Desktop computers and laptops are not backed up (for a listing of which computers are backed up, please see http://support.cc.gatech.edu/services/backups-restores). Users are responsible for backing up any needed business-related files, such as .pst files or browser bookmarks, that cannot be easily stored on a file server. See below for assistance.

Since no personal or work files should remain on a workstation or laptop, the TSO Help Desk will not perform backups before wiping and reloading a machine. In the event that a user inadvertently stored work-related files on a workstation or laptop and is unable to access them, the Help Desk will attempt to assist in recovering those files and instruct the user that in the future, all such files must be stored or backed up to one of our servers. The Help Desk will not assist with the recovery of personal files.
