At approximately 2:30 PM, May 1, 2009, the ARA system began to deny logins. TSO investigated the issue and discovered that the root cause of the outage was due to the abrupt loss of power by the system during the KACB brownout (see http://support.cc.gatech.edu/utilities/alerts/ccb-kacb-power-outage for details), which left too many open file descriptors. This would have affected CoC faculty and students attempting to use ara.cc.gatech.edu or the CCB thin clients. Clearing out these files and restarting ARA corrected this problem. After the system was restarted, it was again providing services at 3:15 PM, May 1.
