UPDATE:  The Cisco software bug causing issues with OIT’s wireless LAWN service has been resolved.  The OIT network team completed final changes to the network infrastructure throughout the Fall 2015 semester.  Changes included upgraded code for the controllers and upgrades to the radius server software as well as a redistribution of radius load and simplification of the GT network topology between components involved in the authentication process.  At this time, the LAWN wireless network is considered stable.  However, rogue wireless access points remain an ongoing issue.

WHAT HAPPENED?
Users have been experiencing issues with OIT’s wireless LAWN service, such as dropping connections or areas with limited or no available connectivity.

WHEN DID IT HAPPEN?
This issue is ongoing.

WHY DID IT HAPPEN?
OIT has identified two primary reasons.  The first is a software bug with the Cisco access points that causes them to begin silently dropping connections when too many people connect to the access point at the same time.  A secondary cause is active rogue access points.  Such devices can interfere with wireless LAWN connectivity.

WHO WAS AFFECTED?
Any faculty, staff, or student attempting to connect to wireless LAWN.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?
If you are experiencing wireless connectivity issues, please use http://lawn.gatech.edu/debug to report your issue. This will ensure that OIT receives as much information as possible regarding your connectivity issue and assists them in fixing this issue.  You may also reference http://lawn.gatech.edu/help/gtwifi/ for preferred configuration settings that may resolve your connectivity issue.

If you are running a wireless access point, which could include a cell phone acting as a hotspot or a device such as a Nintendo DS that acts as an ad-hoc wireless network, please review the FAQ at http://support.cc.gatech.edu/support-tools/faq/can-i-operate-my-own-wifi-access-point and register or disable accordingly.

HAS THE PROBLEM BEEN RESOLVED?
No.  OIT and TSO continue to try to identify rogue access points.
