Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Team in Microsoft Teams
A Teams team is a collection of people, conversations, files, and tools — all in one place. Teams are designed to help you collaborate and communicate effectively with your colleagues or group members. You can use the desktop app, mobile app and web app for this guide.
- Open Microsoft Teams:
Open Microsoft Teams on your computer, in the browser, or on your smartphone. Click Teams then “Join or create a team”:
On the left sidebar, click on the "Teams" icon. This will take you to the Teams section where you can see all the teams you are a part of. At the Top right, click on the + sign to join or create a team.Create a team:
- From template: Select this option if you want to build a new team from the ground up.
- From a group or team: Choose this if you want to create a team based on an existing Microsoft 365 group or team.
- Set Up Your Team:
- Privacy Settings: Decide on the privacy level:
- Private: Only invited members can join the team.
- Public: Anyone in your organization can find and join the team.
- Name Your Team: Enter a unique and descriptive name for your team.
- Add a Description: Optionally, provide a brief description of the team's purpose.

- Add Channel: Teams uses channel spaces within teams for organizing conversations, files, and apps around specific topics
You can also add a Channel if you right-click on the team name
- Enter a name for your channel, add a description to it, and select Channel Type
- Standard: Everyone on the team is part of the channel
Private: Only certain team members can see the conversation
- Add Members:
- You can add members immediately by typing their names or email addresses. You can also add groups or entire contact lists.
