WHAT'S HAPPENING?

All incoming emails from outside the Institute will display an “External” notification in their preview. Messages will also include a banner that clearly indicates that the sender is not part of the Georgia Tech community and that the message should be scrutinized more closely.

WHEN IS IT HAPPENING?

September 2, 2025

WHY IS IT HAPPENING?

A couple of weeks ago, on August 18, 2025, our new CISO, Joe Lewis, emailed the GT community about the recent Payroll Fraud attack as a result of phishing and social engineering attempts.

Georgia Tech is taking steps to enhance its cybersecurity measures over the next few months. One of the initial changes includes the implementation of external sender notifications to assist employees in identifying potentially risky email messages.

This feature will help prevent spam, phishing attacks, email compromise, and accidental data sharing.

WHO IS AFFECTED?

All GT O365 Mail Users using an Outlook mail client and those using MailChimp or other external platforms to send mail to GT members. Users of other mail clients will not see the tags.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?

Be cautious with emails that are flagged as “External” because they are a higher risk of being spam or phishing attempts and may end up in your Spam/Junk folder instead of your inbox.

Groups that still use Mailchimp or other external platforms to send mail to GT members may be affected. Please reach out to collab-support@gatech.edu. They will help reduce the mail flowing into Junk Folders.

WHO SHOULD YOU CONTACT FOR QUESTIONS?

Feel free to contact the TSO Help Desk (404.894.7065, helpdesk@cc.gatech.edu).
