WHAT HAPPENED?
Microsoft has enacted a recall for the AC power cords for Microsoft Surface Pro, Microsoft Surface Pro 2, and Microsoft Surface Pro 3 devices sold before March 15, 2015.
 
 
WHEN DID IT HAPPEN?
The recall program began on Friday, January 22, 2016.
 
 
WHY DID IT HAPPEN?
Microsoft reported that there is a potential fire hazard with the affected AC power cords.  Due to the potential fire hazard, Microsoft recommends immediate cessation of use of the affected cords.
 
 
WHO WAS AFFECTED?
Anyone with one of the affected AC power cords.  If you're unsure if you have an affected cord, there are pictures of the affected old-style and the unaffected new-style cords under the first FAQ "How do I know if I qualify for a free replacement AC power cord (the cord that plugs into an electrical outlet)?" at http://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/warranty-service-and-recovery/powercord.
 
 
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?
Affected users should visit the URL above and request a replacement.
 
 
HAS THE ISSUE BEEN RESOLVED?
Yes.  Microsoft redesigned the AC power cord and is no longer selling the old-style cord.
